Is it true that you can not oversize a TCM factory nitrided cylinder as some advertising claims? . . . No, of course not. |
To get additional use out of cylinders, the bores may be ground oversize to extend their life. Our competition has said that our nitrided TopCare cylinder barrels cannot be ground oversize. Shame on them for misleading you. The Hard Fact is that over-sizing our nitrided cylinder barrels has been standard maintenance practice for over 40 years. Also, the Hard Fact is that most of our cylinders can be over-sized .010"* and still have a hardness up to 40% higher than our competition's "through- hardened" barrels. |
The Blue line on the graph represents the depth of grind into the barrel for .010 inch oversize for overhaul. You will notice at that depth the red line is still depicting a surface hardness of 46 on the Rockwell Hardness scale. |
The nitriding process affects the barrel material to a significant depth. This allows extended service life of the cylinder by grinding oversize and still retaining the exceptional hardness of the nitrided bore. In fact, to get down to just the "thru hardened" level, cylinder bore would have to be ground to almost 0.050 oversize!
